Chinese Dumpling Sale Wednesday to Aid Earthquake Victims
The news from China in the aftermath of the earthquake continues to be bad. Many people will be homeless for the foreseeable future. Health care is a major concern as well as providing food and clothing to those who lost everything in the earthquake. The Junior High organized two Bake Sales last week. We are grateful to the 7th and 8th graders who furnished the items for the Bake Sale.

Jillian Zeng, our teacher from China, has volunteered to teach students in Grades 4-6 how to make Chinese dumplings in Chinese class on Tuesday with the idea that we will sell them to the students during lunch on Wednesday at 50 cents per dumpling.

Here is how you can help.
1. Help underwrite the cost of the meat, vegetables and the wrappers. (Checks made payable to "Nativity".) Jillian estimates that we can get approximately 30 dumplings per pound of meat. If every student buys one, we'll need approximately 17 pounds. This is not meant to be their lunch on Wednesday – it's intended to be a "taste of Chinese cuisine." That said, we plan to make more than one per student, given the appetite of the older students.

2. Send your son/daughter to school on Wednesday with 50 cents and encourage him/her to try a dumpling.

3. Arrange your lunch hour on Wednesday to join us for a sampling of the dumplings. (Be sure to bring your 50 cents!)

Help us provide much needed financial support to aid those in China who have suffered so much. This is a concrete way to build our relationship with Long Cheng Middle School and the people of China. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to call.

What makes Nativity A Great Place to Be?
What will keep it a great place in the future?
Look in today’s Home News for a letter telling about a planning process for Nativity School and how you can become involved. Your ideas can make a difference and are wanted. There’s a way everyone can be involved no matter how much or how little time you have.

Fall Fest Bid-N-Buy

It's not to early to begin thinking about Nativity's Fall Fest and the Bid-n-Buy Booth! Shop the summer sales for great bargains. There's plenty of room to store things so drop items off at the Parish Center. If you need suggestions, just call me! Popular items last year: new bike and outdoor furniture, theatre and sports tickets, Bengals and Reds memorabilia, gift baskets, power tools, jewelry, and household items. Because my last child is graduating from Nativity I'm looking for one or several Co Chairs to take over one of the biggest and busiest Fall Fest booths for Fall Fest '08...just needs organization skills, and some free time-especially Fall est weekend. You have a great volunteer staff in place; the booth just needs someone at the helm. Call me to discuss- Peg Ashbrock 793-9331.

Nativity Lego Robotics Team
Attention 4th through 8th graders! Nativity is again organizing one or more teams of 10 students to participate in the First Lego® League “sport for the mind”. Using the Lego Mindstorms NXT robotics kit, the team will work together to program a robot to carry out the missions in this year’s challenge. The team will also create and present a research project. The 2008 challenge Climate Connections “Building a Global Game Plan”, will be announced in September. The time commitment is similar to a sport, with weekly 2 hour practices starting in September. The season of teamwork and mentoring culminates with a regional tournament in early December.

To cover administrative and material costs, each student will be asked to pay a $40 fee. Students will be placed on the team on a first come first serve basis. If there are parents interested in coaching/helping we can register more than 1 team which will allow more students to participate. Further information can be found at www.firstlegoleague.org or www.ispaceohio.org (follow FLL link). If your 4-8th grader would like to participate, or if you have questions, please call Tony or Grace Severyn at 821-4163 or email us at ajseveryn@earthlink.net.

The Pea Pod Café

The Pea Pod Café, a new spot in Pleasant Ridge, will be opening this summer! The café will be focusing on organic, fair trade and locally grown ingredients with a menu offering teas, smoothies, salads, quiche, soups and sweet breads. If you would be interested in some part time hours and are at least college age, please give Melanie Moore a call at 503-6592 or email at melanie@thepeapodcafe.com.

Lunch Charges

As we approach the end of the school year, we’d like to remind parents that all lunch charges must be paid in full by June 4th. If there are any questions, please contact Paula Mertes, cafeteria manager, at 458-6767. Thanks for your cooperation.

Volunteers Needed for Ridge Day Festival in Pleasant Ridge
July 12, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Looking to volunteer? Searching for some fun this summer? The annual Ridge Day festival, held at the Thousand Hands Playground in Pleasant Ridge, is looking for a few good volunteers to help out with this year’s event. Volunteer opportunities include: parade monitors, set-up and clean-up, booth staff and helping run kids’ games and activities. Volunteers work in shifts of 3 hours. Have questions? Nativity Soap Box Derby
Your help is needed to keep the Nativity/Pleasant Ridge Winning Streak alive at the Cincinnati Soap Box Derby. Since the Derby returned two years ago, there has consistently been a Nativity or Pleasant Ridge representative in the Winners Circle. We want to continue that record this year and in future years.

In 2006, current 8th grader Nathan Record won the Derby and went on to the National Championships to represent Cincinnati. Last year, Mark Mertes, Ridge resident and son of Nativity's Paula Mertes, won the inaugural Cincinnati Cup event. Earlier this year, Mayor Mallory announced a $5000 prize to the neighborhood that sponsors the winning car in the Cincinnati Cup. As of today, the Pleasant Ridge Community Council is not planning to enter a car and defend the title. You can help fund a car that will represent both Nativity and the Pleasant Ridge community and try to win the $5000 for Pleasant Ridge. For a $5 donation, each participating Nativity family would have their name listed on the car, along with the Nativity logo, promoting our great school and the community of Pleasant Ridge.

If your son or daughter, between the ages of 8 and 13, is interested in driving the car, we will collect names and have a random drawing to see who will drive the car. The event takes place on Saturday June 21 and you would need to be available for the entire day if you plan to race. The driver must be a Nativity student and be able to fit in the car. Sponsorship is open to all current and former Nativity students as well as Nativity parishioners who may not have attended Nativity School.

We need to collect all the family sponsorships by May 30. At that time, we will purchase the kit and draw a name to see who will drive the car. See the flyer included with the newsletter. Donations can be sent through school, via Beatrice Newberry in Mrs. Burwinkel's class. Thank you!

Summer Reading Program
We all know that summer reading is important for our children not only to maintain their reading proficiency but also to improve their reading skills. Participation in our neighborhood Pleasant Ridge Library’s READQUEST summer reading program offers children a fun way to accomplish this objective. The program sponsored by the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County is designed to offer an incentive by awarding prizes for each level the child completes and an entry in the grand prize drawing. This year, the children’s grand prize is a bike and the teen’s prize is a MP3 Player.

Official Sign Up Date for ReadQuest at the Pleasant Ridge Library:
Saturday, May 31st, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Bring your child to the Pleasant Ridge Library between the hours of 2:00 – 4:00PM to receive a sign-up card, an ice cream treat, and join in a craft activity. The program runs from June 1st to July 31st. If you miss the sign up date you can still join the program any time after June 1st.

Only Eight Days Left!
Completed blue books may be turned in until Wednesday, May 28th in order to qualify for this year’s Literary Award Book Club. Have you checked with your teacher about what award-winning books were read in class? Have you checked your list of AR books that you read against the award-winning book list? In the blue book, mark down the date when you finished the book, have your parent initial it, and when you have the requirements completed (only 10 books in the grade-appropriate categories), turn the blue book into the office. If you have any questions, please contact Susanne Hagerty (sjhagerty@gmail.com or 351-6818).

The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt is another one of the 2008 Newbery Honor books. Seventh-grader, Holling Hoodhood, is convinced his teacher hates him. Through their Wednesday afternoon Shakespeare sessions she helps him cope with events both wildly funny and deadly serious. “To thine own self be true” is just one of the life lessons he learns.

Feathers by Jacqueline Woodson is also a 2008 Newberry Honor book. It tells the story of how a new boy’s arrival in a sixth-grade classroom helps Frannie recognize the barriers that separate people, and the importance of hope as a bridge. Transcendent imagery and lyrical prose deftly capture a girl learning to navigate the worlds through words.… Courtesy of www.ala.org (American Library Association website).

Green News
With all the rain we’ve had lately, it’s hard to imagine a water shortage, or a even a need to conserve water. But clean water can be hard to come by, especially in times of natural disasters such as those in China, Myanmar and here in the US. Although our planet is 71% water, only 0.65% of that water can be used for drinking.

Fact: If all Americans collected just 1 gallon of water one time per week while waiting for the shower to warm up, we would save 15.8 billion gallons of water a year. That’s enough to fill the Reflecting Pool in Washington D.C. 2,338 times!

Take Action: Try collecting just one bucket of water a week from your shower, or even from the kitchen sink while the water heats up. Use it to water your house plants or those in the garden.
Another great way to conserve water is to install a Rain Barrel. This is simply a large container set up beneath a downspout and used to collect rainwater. The water can then be used for watering your garden or lawn. (Don’t forget a net on top to keep away mosquitoes!)

ReBags have Arrived!
After a long wait, reBags have finally arrived, and will be sent home this week! If you’re still interested in purchasing some bags, please complete the order form below and return it to the office, along with your payment. Questions, please call Beth Muething at 531-6128 or email bsmuething@aol.com. Thanks!

Afterschool Care for Next School Year
It is not too early to think about after school care for next year. I have some openings for the 2008-2009 school year. Homework is done at my house so you can enjoy evenings with your children. I also live very close to the park. Stephanie Amos 631-0843

John Castellini Coach Award 2008
A $500 award is given to 2 Nativity coaches per year with the award being announced at the Closing Ceremony of the Nativity School year. The award is to be applied to tuition at a Catholic elementary or high school and the check from this fund, administered by the Athletic Boosters, will be made payable only to a school. In the event the coach selected does not have a child enrolled at a Catholic elementary or high school he or she can direct the award to a scholarship fund at the Archdiocesan school of their choice.
The award is funded by the receipt of all proceeds from the Nativity Boosters John Castellini Golf Outing held on the Saturday in May immediately preceding Memorial Day.

Nominations are sought from all Nativity School parents via notice in the Tuesday Home News and nominations are also sought from each Nativity Sports Coordinator. A narrative of 100 words or less is desired with the nomination but “name only” nominations will be accepted. Nominations are to be submitted to the Nativity Athletic Director Joe Muenchen by Friday May 30, 2008.
A committee comprised of the Booster President, Athletic Director, All Sports Coordinators, and Shelley Castellini-Heard (or one of John’s children – Lindsay, Sam, Jake, or Barbara) will select the winners of the Coach Award.

The criteria for the award is a coach who exhibits the qualities John showed during his all too brief coaching career at Nativity, including: teaching sound fundamentals, encouraging each player regardless of their natural athletic ability to always do their best and recognition of that performance, an emphasis on sportsmanship – win or lose, and a focus on imparting Christian values. To sum up one should consider this quote: “A good coach will make you a better player. A great coach will make you a better person.”

Nativity’s Bridge to China
In October, Nativity approached the Cincinnati – Liuzhou Sister City Committee to explore the possibility of a partnership with a Chinese school. Beth Hoffman Tu, Chair of the Cin – Liu Sister Cities Committee, identified Long Cheng Middle School as a place to start the conversation. After months of discussion and negotiation with representatives from Long Cheng, we are proud to announce that we have agreed on the components of a Memorandum of Understanding that will define our relationship through 2011. Our partnership calls for the following:

  • Fr. Paul Deluca, Beth Hoffman Tu, Bob Herring
For students in Grades 7 and 8 the opportunity for a student exchange in the spring of even numbered years. We will send a delegation to China in March 2008 and host in April 2008.

  • For students in Grade 6 – a year long project with the 6th grade at Long Cheng that will enhance our mutual understanding of each other’s culture, traditions, and history.

  • In exchange for immersion in an English language environment along with room and board, a teacher from Long Cheng Middle School will spend a year at Nativity teaching Chinese to our students.

  • Students in Grades 5-6 will have Chinese language instruction 3 times per week.

  • For students in Grade 4 – Chinese language instruction twice a week.

  • For students in Grades K-3 – Two classes per month taught by the Chinese teacher from Long Cheng Middle School that will focus on Chinese traditions and culture.

The Cin-Liu Sister City recommends that the teacher from Long Cheng be hosted by families in three week segments. We will be looking for 10 to 15 families who would like to take advantage of this opportunity. In August the Cin-Lou Sister City representative will provide an orientation on hosting a Chinese teacher. If you are interested in hosting the Chinese teacher for 3 weeks, please contact the school office.

This is a wonderful opportunity for the Nativity Community and we hope each and every member will take advantage of it.

Mr. Yost with the students who
nominated him for the Award.

We thought you’d like to know . . .

  • Mr. Andy Yost, Junior High Language Arts Teacher, is the recipient of the Panera Rising Above Award. Nominated by our students, he will be recognized on Thursday for the impact he has had on the students through the Darfur “I Am Aware” project. Congratulations, Mr. Yost!! • Mr. Dave Ashbrock has created a DVD that documents The Friendship Project we hosted in September. We held the world premier on Wednesday and it received rave reviews from all that were there. If you’d like a copy of the DVD ($5.00), please fill out the attached form and send it to the school office.

  • Two students from our Dutch partner school, Dr. Aletta Jacobs, would like to follow in the footsteps of Lea, Hauke, Christine, Inken, Petra, Sarah and Daniel - graduates of our German partner school, Otto Hahn Gymnasium. They’d expressed interest in volunteering at Nativity during the fall semester of 2008. If the details can be agreed upon, we’ll be looking for host families for the two Dutch students this time next year.

The Essay Nominating Mr. Yost for the Rising Above Award
by Jena Bange

At the beginning of this school year, most of the 8th graders including myself were not excited to meet our new teacher, Mr. Yost. We had an amazing teacher last year, and we didn’t think Mr. Yost would even compare to him. We were proven wrong. None of us were looking forward to reading short stories, but Mr. Yost helped us find a deeper meaning in what we read then we ever have before. Mr. Yost does that with everything he teaches us. I have learned many things this year that will help me in High School, and College. But most importantly, I learned how to be compassionate towards others.

Mr. Yost organized the 4 Days for Darfur that we had at Nativity. During these days, we learned that some refugees in Darfur have nothing that we have, and they go around every day knowing that they could be killed, captured or raped at any time. Of course we felt bad for them, but what good would that do? We spent the Sunday night before our 4 days in the cafeteria, sleeping on the hard floor, with very little food or water. We brought nothing but a blanket to sleep on. We also raised $6,000 throughout February and March, to benefit the Darfurians. We want to be sympathetic, but also empathetic. We had a protest, a walk-a-thon, and many assemblies to raise awareness. Every student at Nativity wrote a letter to Senator Sherrod Brown to tell him that as Catholics, we believe that something needs to be done to stop the terrible genocide in Darfur.

Although the 7th and 8th grade played a huge part in helping Darfur, Mr. Yost played an even bigger part. He always told us that we did more then him, but we couldn’t have done it without him. He was the one who taught us all about genocide and Darfur, and he was the one who came up with this idea.

Mr. Yost helped me realize that it’s not enough just to feel sorry for someone. You have to do something to help. You have to put yourself in their shoes, so you know what it would be like to be them. Mr. Yost deserves to receive the Above All Award because he does everything with one thought in his mind: How will this help others?
