The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an approach to the religious formation of children. It is rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. She was born into this world a child of mixed anchestry, her mother was an Algonquin and her father a Mohawk. It is believed that Kateri has performed many miracles since her death on April 17, 1680, curing the sick and helping those in need through their prayers to Kateri. After much investigation concerning Kater's miracles, she was declared venerable by Pope Pius XII on January 3, 1943. Kateri was then beautified by Pope John Paul II on June 30, 1980. Sr. Mary Grace Thul, O.P.: http://sistermarygrace.artspan.com Sr. Mary Grace is a popular nationally (and internationally) known artist. She was our featured artist for Leatare Sunday in 2007 (Friday evening, March 16 at 7pm in the school gymnasium) with an art show that also featured art works from our 7th graders who are preparing for Confirmation. Sister made her work available fot sale at very reasonable prices. She was with us from the Bronx, NYC, and St. Ursula (her alma mater) performed choral pieces at this year's Leatare art series. Over 300 people attended the art show. 2/3 of what Sister brought for display was sold. This was the second best show she has ever had. Murals of The Prodigal Son and Ambassadors for Christ (the Nativity) may be viewed in the parish office building chapel. St. Peter in Chains is one of the hidden trasures of the city of Cincinnati. It is a cathedral because the archbishop's chair is there (his cathedra). She was and remains a prod to the whole Church to devote ourselves to social justice and to change unjust systems within our society. Despite her many frustrations with the hierarhy, New Yorker Dorothy Day, as a convert to Catholicism, remained always loyal and faithful to the Catholic Church, although she was known to play hardball with some bishops. Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha: http://conservation.catholic.org/kateri.htm Along with St. Francis of Assisi, Blessed Kateri Tekakawitha is the patroness of ecology, as proclaimed by Pope John Paul II. Nativity celebrates Kateri Day on her feast day, July 14. We will fly the flags of the Iroquois League and the Mohawk nation on our flagpoles one week prior to Kateri Day and on the day itself. Be sure to look for them. They tell us that her celebration looms near. This year, Kateri's feast falls on a Saturday so the festivities will take place after the 4:30 Mass in the courtyard. Many Indian artifacts will be on display. Native American expert Sr. Georgia Marie, SDP will be with us. Pray for the canonization of native American young woman Katari Tekakwitha of the Mohawks. St. Nicholas Center: www.stnicholascenter.org If it's December 5, you-know-who will be visiting Nativity for evening prayer at 7pm in Church and with treats for good boys and girls. December 5 is the vigil of St. Nicholas. This is an excellent site to learn more about one of our popular saints (the new inter-parish school at former St. John the Evangelist School in Deer Park has taken the name of "St. Nicholas Academy".) Pray for the success of this new school and neighbor. The Athenaeum of Ohio: www.mtsm.org The Athenaeum of Ohio has just celebrated its 175th year. Founded in 1831 by the first Bishop of Cincinnati, the Most Reverend Edward Dominic Fenwick, O.P. (apostle of Ohio), the off shoots of the Athenauem are the Mt. St. Mary Seminary of the West as well as Lay Pastoral Ministry and the deacon training program. St. Xavier High School and Xavier University were also originally part of the oldest active seminary west of the Alleganies. Excellent classes are available for audit or full credit. The Eugene H. Maly library is a hidden gem in the city of Cincinnati. Voice of the Faithful: www.voiceofthefaithful.org Voice of the Faithful was born in the midst of the anguish of clergy abuse in the American Church. It is recognized by our Archbishop and permitted to be active in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. This is their national website. Among their important work is that of supporting faithful priests. Kennedy Heights Arts Center: www.kennedyarts.com What a gift we have right here in Nativity's backyard. See what's happening at the KHAC as they update their website and please support this wonderful gem of our neighborhood. All Saints Episcopal Church: www.allsaintscincinnati.org For decades (since the days of Archbishop Bernardin) the Church of the Nativity of Our Lord and All Saints Episcopal Church have shared common ministries together and were both instrumental in the founding of the Caring Place at Kennedy Heights Presbyterian Church. In the 1960s, both parishes worked together to stem the "white flight" that was happening in neigborhoods surrounding our parish, and we worked hard to keep Pleasant Ride and Kennedy Heights integrated. The Institute has helped us to organize the St. Francis of Assisi blessing of Pets and they have supplied us with various inserts for our bulletin. An excellent and educational resource. Sisters of Mercy, Cincinnati: www.mercycincinnati.org After the Ursulines discontinued their fine service to Nativity, the Sisters of Mercy became "our" religious community here at Nativity. We continue to identify ourselves as a mercy parish and promote the spirit of mercy as envisioned by Catherine McAuley of Dublin, Ireland. Holy Trinity Parish: www.holytrinitynorwood.org ee what's happening with our neighbors to the south, just down the pike. Holy Trinity was established when all three Norwood parishes---Sts. Peter and Paul, St. Elizabeth, and St. Matthew combind together in 1994 at the former Sts. Peter and Paul site. Holy Trinity School is closing this year and will join St. John the Evangelist School in forming the new St. Nicholas Academy at the former St. John the Evangelist School site.
